About the Local Area of
La Axarquia (Area East of Malaga)
About the Axarquia
The capital of the Axarquia is Velez Malaga, the capital Velez
as it is referred to by the locals is a traditionally a market
town 4KM inland from Torre del Mar. Interesting sights in Velez
include the Moorish castle which stands on a hill above the town,
the churches of San Juan Bautista, Santa Maria La Mayor and Nuestra
Senora de la encarnacion. Holy week in Velez is revered to be
one of the most notable in all of Andalucia, but the most important
event is the royal San Miquel festival this takes place in late
September.
The Axarquia is the first region of Andalucia
to have a Tram system, running from Torre del Mar to Velez and
plans are in progress to continue the line to run as far as
Rincon de la Victoria falling just short of Malaga city itself.
The Axarquia has some of the best scenery to
offer, with the Maroma mountain standing at 2080 metres above
sea level at it’s highest point and is often snow capped
during the winter months.
This area of Malaga is reputed to have the best
climate in Europe with long hot summers and mild winters, on
average you can expect more than 300 days of sunshine per year.
With over 30 white washed villages to discover all steeped with
their own history, such as Frigliana, Torrox, Vinuela, Competa,
Alcaucin, Sayalonga, Comares, Iznate, Canillas, Periana, Almachar,
Arenas, and more….
The Axarquia is strongly becoming a favourite
place to reside for people all over Europe, due to the weather,
hospitality of the locals, the amenities it offers and most
of all the quality of life. There is only one way to discover
the Axarquia and that is to come and see it for yourself!!
Torre del Mar
Torre del Mar, a coastal town 30 km from the centre of Málaga
and 20 km from Nerja, offers all the advantages and conveniences
of a town, coupled with the peace and tranquillity of an Andalucian
village. We are located in Axarquia, a region blessed with natural
beauty. We are close to a range of tourist attractions such
as a Sports Marina, Golf Courses, Aerodrome, Natural Parks,
Andalucian White Villages, Historical Monuments, Night Spots
and Fairs. The village, famous for its fried fish (a local speciality),
also offers a range of restaurants. All of these reasons, along
with the convenient location and proximity to major historical
cities such as Seville, Ronda, Granada and Córdoba, make
this an exceptional spot on the Costa del Sol.
Caleta de Velez
Caleta de Velez which is located East of Malaga. Caleta De Velez
with it’s quiet Spanish lifestyle, traditional Marina
, nearby shopping centre, beautiful 18 hole golf course (Baviera)
and 2KM promenade stretching through to the next coastal resort
of Torre Del Mar.
Nerja
The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa,
the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade along
the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish
castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and
the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop
of hazy blue mountains.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes here to choose from,
and the visitor can hire a horse-drawn carriage to explore the
most romantic corner of the town.
The town's monuments include the 17th century Church of El Salvador,
in a style which is a charming mixture of baroque and Moorish,
or mudéjar, and the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa,
which descend to Burriana Beach.
However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly
its fascinating caves, located just three kilometres from the
centre of town. They include archaeological treasures such as
paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains.
One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into
a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the
summer.
La Vinuela
In the area surrounding Viñuela its lake is an environment
for enjoying Rural and Active Tourism and is steadily being
developed. This area, as with the majority of the Axarquia,
enjoys great demand among those who look for direct contact
with the rural and natural environment.
